I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music.
-Billy Joel
Music is truly the most universal language that can reach all people. Music is a life changing experience. Music is a form of love. It is through the power of music that lives can be changed and soothe the soul.
This is a valuable lesson I was able to learn by being a part of the Federal Way Youth Orchestra. Every Christmas season we had one tradition, it was going to the homeless shelter and the Single Mother assistant center and playing Christmas music. As a young kid, it did not mean much to me until 2008 when I experienced something that changed my perspective.
While playing the same old “We wish you a merry Christmas” song with some mistakes in between and when I looked up I saw 3 single mothers start to cry. As an empathetic crier myself, this brought me to tears and made me unable to play viola as I was crying with the single mothers. As embarrassing as it was crying on stage with these women, it became very clear to me the power that music brings to all people. As a young child I never thought that coming with my Viola would make an impact in the lives of others but the act of showing up and playing these simple songs was a genuine form of love. That is when I learned the valuable lesson of the importance of showing up and loving all people in my community and all over the world. This was the start of my mission to be someone who will continuously act for the best interest of others and make the world a better place.
In essence, sharing music with all people is not merely an act of entertainment-it is a catalyst for positive change, empowerment, and transformation. As we recognize the profound impact that music can have on the lives of those facing adversity, let us continue to champion music initiatives that bring solace, joy, and hope to the most vulnerable members of our communities. Through the universal language of music, we can create a harmonious world where every voice is heard, and every heart is uplifted.
